This Civil War cast iron caltrop, c. 1861-1965. is an anti-personnel weapon designed to be distributed to break or damage the hooves of horses. This simple, spiky weapon has been used extensively in the American Civil War, but although they were dropped onto the battlefield in large quantities, they are rarely found. This eight-point caltrop is a rare piece of American military history.
