Description
The POW letters came from Peter Tenhaef who was a German POW in Egypt. He was taken prisoner in May 1945. His POW Camp was: Camp 306 Fayid/Bitter Lake, Egypt (He use ‘Lager 306/19 aswell). His POW number was 103177.
The letters were written to his German sister HJohanna and his Dutch brother in law Jan, who lived in Amsterdam-East, Haroekoestraat 16 III, The Netherlands.
The two yellow forms were used to ask permission to sent a package (Christmas package for a prisoner of war, as noted on the form.) from the Netherlands to Egypt. The package would contain: 2 packs of cigarettes, half an ounce of tobacco with rolling papers, 2 ounces of chocolates, 1 pack (a kind of brand?), 1 pack of cocoa with sugar, 1 pack of powdered milk, 1 pack of butter cake, 1 can of milk, 1 can of fish and 1 roll of peppermints.
On the yellow form they use an different name for the POW camp: Independent Work Camp 2722, POW Middle East, Egypt.
The stamp underneath states: We are returning this application to you because, under current regulations, it is not possible to grant you the requested permit. CENTRAL IMPORT AND EXPORT SERVICE. Dated and signed November 20th, 1946.
German Prisoners of War (PoW) Independent Working Companies operated in Egypt during and after World War II, specifically in areas like the Suez Canal Zone. These companies performed various labor tasks for the British Army, such as construction, vehicle workshops, and ammunition disposal. “M.E.L.F” could be Middle East Land Forces.
